Based on a haunting folk-song called “The Ballad of Barbara Allen,” this powerful fantasy set in the Smoky Mountains is spectacular, intimate, and intense. This stage classic recounts the story of a witch-boy named John who falls in love with the beautiful Barbara Allen. He makes a deal with the conjur man and the conjur woman so that he can become human, get married to Barbara Allen, raise a family, and become part of the community. But the mountain witches resent his happiness and want him back, and the superstitious townspeople are afraid of him and cannot accept him for who he is. The moving, poetic dialogue and the mounting religious frenzy come to a fearsome and tragic end in this astonishing legend, sure to be a night of theatre you won’t forget.
